ELN Implementation Services

Life Scientists working together

The Trusted ELN Implemenation Services Partner for Life Sciences

Astrix has supported laboratory informatics projects for life science organizations for more than 30 years. Our ELN consultants combine deep scientific domain knowledge with hands-on platform expertise, so your electronic laboratory notebook rollout reflects the way your scientists work.

Your electronic laboratory notebook is where every experiment, observation and result gets captured – which makes it the single most important record in your lab. Astrix is a global laboratory informatics services leader with expertise in electronic lab notebook (ELN) evaluation, selection, implementation, and integration. We help R&D and regulated testing organizations move away from paper lab notebooks and fragmented spreadsheets toward a secure, searchable and fully validated electronic notebook environment.

Astrix is a full-service ELN life sciences services firm with expertise across:

Selecting the Right ELN Technology

With multiple electronic lab notebook software vendors on the market - each built for a different mix of chemistry, biology, and regulated workflows - choosing the right ELN is one of the most consequential technology decisions a lab will make. Astrix runs a structured, vendor-agnostic ELN selection process built around your science, your compliance requirements, and your budget.

Because Astrix is not tied to any single ELN software provider, our recommendations are impartial. We develop a comprehensive shortlist of ELN and electronic notebook vendors that fit your requirements, then guide your team through demonstrations, requirements scoring, and reference checks to identify which electronic laboratory notebook is the best fit for your lab.

ELN Implementation

Our ELN implementation methodology is built around your specific lab processes, not a one-size-fits-all rollout. Every engagement is led by consultants who understand both the underlying electronic lab notebook software and the regulatory context - GLP, GMP, and 21 CFR Part 11 - your lab operates under. A poorly configured ELN creates more problems than the paper lab notebook it was meant to replace: broken workflows, incomplete audit trails, and scientists who quietly go back to their notebooks and binders. Astrix helps life science companies select, implement, validate and support the right ELN for their research, development and quality operations.

A typical Astrix ELN implementation includes:

More about ELN Systems

An electronic laboratory notebook, or ELN, is software that replaces the traditional paper lab notebook as the system of record for experimental work. Instead of handwritten pages, scientists document protocols, observations, calculations, and results directly in the electronic notebook, where entries are timestamped, attributable, and searchable.Modern ELN software typically supports structured and unstructured data capture, electronic signatures, audit trails, chemistry-aware tools like structure drawing and reaction search, and direct integration with lab instruments and a laboratory information management system (LIMS). For regulated life sciences organizations, an ELN also needs to support 21 CFR Part 11 compliance, data integrity requirements, and long-term, defensible electronic records - the same expectations that governed the paper lab notebook, now applied to a digital environment.

ELN vs. LIMS: What’s the Difference?

This is one of the most common questions we hear, and the short answer is that ELN and LIMS solve related but distinct problems. An electronic lab notebook is built around the experiment – the narrative of what a scientist did, why, and what they observed, similar to a chemistry notebook or research journal. A LIMS is built around the sample – tracking it through a workflow, tests, results, and disposition, typically in a QC or high-throughput testing environment.

Many life science organizations run ELN and LIMS side by side, with integration between the two so that experimental context from the notebook connects to sample and test data in the LIMS. Astrix has deep expertise in both, which means we design your ELN and LIMS environment as one connected data ecosystem rather than two disconnected systems.
